The All-New Popeye Hour
This classic cartoon features the famous character, Popeye the Sailor, defending the honor of his girlfriend, Olive Oyl from Bruto, the cunning brute. Returning characters included Wimpy, Pappy, and Popeye's nephews. The comic strip that later derived into an animated show was created by Elzie Crisler Segar. The cartoons first appeared in the King Features comic strip Thimble Theater on January 17, 1929. Popeye came to be known as one of the most popular comics in the 1930s.
Max and Dave Fleischer's Fleischer Studios created in 1933 a series of theatrical cartoons that featured the famous character. Created for Paramount Pictures, the cartoon became as popular as Mickey Mouse. The Popeye show came to be produced for television from 1960 to 1962 by King Features, and from 1978 to 1982 and 1987 to 1988 by Hanna-Barbera Productions.
The show was comprised of three segments , that later developed into four:
- Adventures of Popeye: Much like the classic show.
- Popeye's Treasure Hunt: Olive and Popeye's search for treasure.
- Dinky Dog: Adventures of the largest dog in the world.
- Popeye's Sports Parade (1979-1980): In which Popeye plays sports.
A movie was also created that starred the famous sailor. In the live-action musical from 1980, Robin Williams played Popeye, Paul Smith was Bluto and Shelley Duvall - Olive Oyl.
